Several weeks ago, I almost stepped on a piece of paper that was laying on the floor at the studio. It seemed as if someone had slipped a little something underneath the door. When I flipped the piece of paper over I found that it was a photo of some art. On the back of the photo was a phone number, so I called it. The photo belonged to Mr. Steve Webb, an Artist who resides in Encinitas, CA. He said that he had done a series colorful dog drawings and thought, because I have a dog photography studio, that I might be interested in his work. I asked him what he would like to do with his work and he explained to me that he just does these drawings and thought I might be interested...no reason...just interested. Well, I just think they're great and I'm excited to be able to present some of Steve's work via our blog. Here is the first in a series that we will be sharing with you. This one reminds me of my very own Boston Terrier, Gus, who is a bit nervous around big dogs. We hope you enjoy.

Busy, Busy..Makes it hard to keep up with it all sometimes. Over the last few weeks we have had the pleasure of photographing a wonderful family of Doberman Pinschers....well, 2 Dobies and 1 Min Pin. Their mom, Raylee, has been bringing them in all the way from Barstow, CA. She surprised us, yet again, with a most wonderful gift for our Studio Warming Party (more on that later). Meet Rocko and Petey

They may not be celebrities in the 'Hollywood' sense, but if you frequent Camp Run-A-Mutt in San Diego, you probably know these little characters are truly stars. Rocko and Petey belong to Severn and Mikel, who are part of a team of great guys that operate the doggie day care. We held a photo session day at Camp Run-A-Mutt and snapped these portraits in between our other sessions. Camp Run-A-Mutt joined us in taking top honors in the San Diego News 10's A List. They were voted Best Doggie Day Care and We were voted Best Pet Photography.

Normally, we are sending thanks and photos to our friends and clients, but recently this role was reversed. One of our recent subjects came all the way from Barstow. Dobby, the Doberman Pinscher, was so handsome and well behaved he practically made it easy on us. Traveling from Barstow was a pretty long trek, so Dobby's mom took advantage of a local dog park and Del Mar dog beach while waiting for the photographs to process. Later that day I received a nice message accompanied with some pictures of their day at the beach....we would like to share them with you.

"Just a quick note to say thanks for the great session with Dobby. It was a great experience and I'm looking forward to coming back in 2 weeks with Keeper. "

Banner Auction

As you are cruising around Encinitas you may notice some fabulous art banners hanging from the street lamps. "Pretty cool" you may say. Well, you would be right and here's why.

All of the banners are created by local artists and all of them benefit a cause as part of the Arts Alive program from the Artist Colony 101. OH MY DOG! Photography was asked to produce a banner and we chose Rancho Coastal Humane Society as the beneficiary.

We chose the this quote because we are always amazed by a dog's ability to love, even after some of the toughest circumstances. The dog in the photograph is Illy, a chocolate lab-husky mix. She is a beautiful mixed breed!

The Live Banner Auction (with professional auctioneer, Rich Houk volunteering his services) will take place May 31, 2009 in the courtyard at Cardiff Towne Center, located at the corner of San Elijo and Birmingham.

Silent bids may be placed on the banners at the Unveiling, and bids can continue to be made while the banners hang on the Coast Highway until the Live Auction in May. This is the 14th year the Kiwanis club has held this event, making it the original contest of it's kind. There are a number of categories other than ugly so you will be sure to find one to fit your pet. And remember, it is all for a good cause!

We will be in the studio photographing doggies all weekend so if you go, take lots of pictures, we would love to see them, because we don't believe there is such a thing as an ugly dog. You know what they say, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder!"

Our new studio has great high ceiling, big natural light windows AND [drum roll] is on the ground floor! It is only a block down the street from our old space at 816 South Coast Highway. We are right behind the DEMA office with loads of free parking in back.

Our new studio space is a work in progress. We have been packing up the truck, painting the new space and marveling at how much stuff we had accumulated in our old studio. In a few days we will be open for business.

Free Agents Kickball | We Are The Champions!

Amazing! Astounding! And just plain fun! The Free Agents kickball team went into Monday nights championship round with determination, and ended the night as the 2008 Encinitas Kickball League Champions. The evening was full of great plays, unbeknown heroes and heavy competition. It all started with the semi-final game that was played at 6:15 against the former champs, Recess Never Ends. The Free Agents took an early lead 3-0, unphased by Recess Never Ends' pitcher, who was throwing harder and crazier curveballs than ever. However, Recess came back to tie the game in the 4th inning. In the top of the 5th, The Free Agents came roaring back and scored 3 more runs. Recess made another push in the bottom of the 6th by loading the bases, but they were only able to score one run. The Free Agents held on for the win. The charity kickballers then watched the next semi-final game, as Team Hadouken won a hard played game against the Misfits by a score of 3 to 2.

The table was set. Team Hadouken vs. The Free Agents in the finals. Free Agents scored first, going up 2-o. Hadouken came right back and tied it up in the first inning. the Agents got another run in the 3rd, but Team Hadouken charged forward by scoring 2 runs in the top of the 4th inning. Behind 3-4 in the bottom of the 5th, the Free Agents scored again to tie the game. A conference was called by the umpire and the team captains agreed that teams would play until a true victory could be decided. The Free Agents had an opportunity in the bottom of the 6th to have a runner in scoring position, but Mike Fish decided to go for third base, only to get a leg cramp and be thrown out. It was a real sad sight. Top of the 7th, the FA's stellar defense held up again and Hadouken just couldn't score. Bottom of the 7th, Free Agent stud kicker, Steve booted a nice single. Then Steve was moved to second on another single by someone I can not name because the excitement had overtaken me :) which brought to the plate Amber. Team Hadouken brought their infield in tight, disparately needing an out. You could feel the intensity. The pitch was tossed. Amber stepped in for the kick. She connected! and it was a whopper! Over the short stop's head. Steve was waived to home and SCORES! Free Agents WIN!!! Then it was time high fives and hugs.

The Free Agents and OH MY DOG! Photography will be hosting a celebration for the win and to announce the amount earned for the Rancho Coastal Humane Society through their charity efforts. Date to be determined, so stay tuned.

It has been a great season. The team doubled their total wins this season over the previous three seasons combined. But more importantly, the team has kept it's identity as a vehicle to go out, have fun and meet new people. Thank you to everyone involved! Mike and Tee

Free Agents Win, Play for Championship Next Monday

The Free Agents charity kickball team continued to showcase their stellar defense and won easily in the first round of the Encinitas Adult Kickball League playoffs by a score of 6 to 0. The win sends the team to next weeks double header championship finale Monday, November 10; where they will play in the semi-finals at 6:15. A win in the semi-final game will put them in the championship game that same evening at 8:15. Come on out and support the team!

In other news, quite literally. The Free Agents were featured in the Coast News newspaper on page A21 this week. Some photographs and an inscription state how the team is sposored by OH MY DOG! Photography and playing for charity to benefit the Ranch Coastal Humane Society

The Free Agents take first place, look forward to playoffs

It was not a pretty win. The actual score of the game was 3 - 2 in favor of the Bend It Like Chewbeccam kickball squad. However, the Free Agents showed their spirit by showing up in costume for the annual Costume Kickball Game dressed in full animal themed regalia (including pets and babies). The Bend It team chose not to dress up. The Costume Game gives a point to every member on the team that shows up in costume, thus giving the Free Agents 14 extra points! The final official outcome was therefore, 16 - 3. The win helped the Free Agents grasp sole possession of first place in the league and earned them a bye week in the first round of the playoffs. The championship playoff round will take place in 2 weeks on Monday, Novebember 10 at 6:15.

As you well know by now, The Free Agents have been playing for charity to benefit the Rancho Coastal Humane Society. The team and their sponsor, OH MY DOG! Photography have been diligently asking for a donation per/run. Many gracious people have stepped up to the plate to donate. The team has really improved this year and finished the season by scoring 45 runs! The donations and runs will be tallied shortly, followed by a victory party where the donations will be handed over the the RCHS.

Thank you to everyone involved! It's been a terrific season and we hope to do it again.

Big Win for the Free Agents

Are these dogs smiling?...
...Yes, they are. They're smiling because the kings of the kickball field, the Free Agents, have won again. The bye week must have been good for the Free Agents because they really stuck it to the Misfits, the first place team in the Encinitas Adult Kickball League, with a 9 to 0 victory.
Our beloved charity kickballers were firing on all pistons and willing to sacrifice their own bodies to win, which was exemplified by Kasey's willingness to skin her knee while diving to reach first base safely ;-). The win gives the Free Agents a chance to claim sole possession of first place with a win next week (and a Misfits loss). Next weeks game is the annual and infamous Holloween game, where team members can scare...I mean, score points just for being in costume. The Free Agents theme for this game is 'Animals' so come on out dressed as your favorite animal and give a little support. The animal theme is fitting considering the Free Agents are playing this season to benefit the Rancho Coastal Humane Society. Pet Photography for Health and Happiness

Every now and then something happens here at the studio that has us all reflecting back on our own lives and taking inventory. A recent client booked us for a session to photograph his sister's dogs. He wanted it done right away because his sister had suddenly been diagnosed with leukemia and was going to be hospitalized immediately. He wanted her to be surrounded with loving images from home(can you say, very cool brother?), therefore we photographed Mr. Russell Augustus and Mr. Carter Elliot. We certainly hope that Russell and Carter's mommy is feeling better and we wish her much health and happiness. In fact we are wishing everybody much health and happiness!

The Animal Keeper-Dog Owner Apprecitation Day

Back in August, we received a rather flattering phone call from one of the friendly folks at The Animal Keeper dog and pet day camp. They were notifying us that they were going to hold a dog owners appreciation day and they wanted to invite some pet industry professionals to share the event with them and their clients. They went on to say that they saw our website and thought that our pet photography was great, and that they wanted us to be involved with the event. Of course we wanted to be involved! So on Saturday, September 27 we set up an information table and joined in on the festivities. We met some extremely wonderful people and learned that everybody at the Oceanside location was fun and friendly. They even let our little Gus go hang out in their 'Tiny Tots' day camp for small dogs. One of the major events of the day, AKC Canine Good Citizen testing, was hosted by Rick Hawes and Gina Austin of Contented Canine(email- contentedcanines@cox.net). Most of the day was spent socializing and enjoying puppy and people treats. Thank you so much, Christy and Renee, for contacting us. We had a good time and hope we can do it again.

This is Tucker, a gentle giant. He is a Harlequin Great Dane with a shy but very, very sweet disposition. I heard from Tucker's owner yesterday that Tucker is having a rough time with some debilitating back problems. Let's all keep Tuck in our thoughts.

OH MY DOG! Free Agents return to glory

It was all smiles last night as the Free Agents found their stride against the Playground Bullies and cruised to a 10 to 1 victory in Encinitas Adult Kickball League play. The Free Agents scored early and often while welcoming back from injury, Mark 'Big Papi' Deweese, who kicked two home runs. Next week is a bye week for the charity kickballers. However, they are going to host a friends and family fun game. The fun game will be played at Leo Mullen Sports Park
951 Via Cantebria, in Encinitas (subject to change) at 6pm Monday, Oct 13.

The 10 runs will definitely help with our charity efforts for the Rancho Coastal Humane Society and brings the total runs for the season to 29. Please continue the drive to get pledges. Star Yorkies

Meet Donnie and Max

Whenever you decide to devote your life to working with animals, you will find that there are many opportunities to volunteer to help with a plethora of animal charities. You probably already know about our kickball team and how we are playing for the Rancho Coastal Humane Society, but we also work with other charities. It is not uncommon for us to donate a portrait session to a silent auction or raffle. Another way we like to help is by offering a portrait session for shelters to give away as an incentive for hard to adopt dogs. One of these sessions was recently given away from the Helen Woodward Animal Center, which brings us to Donnie the dog. Donnie was adopted by Amber from Helen Woodward. Amber decided that she would like to bring Donnie and his new feline brother, Max, in for photos together. Donnie was quite excited to be out and about, playing in the studio. Max was a little more mellow. Congratulations to both Amber and Donnie and their new family.

I love to meet new dog breeds. These unusual canines are Thai Ridgebacks. They come in a few colors and a range of sizes. These two beauties are Mai Thai and Rikshaw. They represented two sizes and colors. They have a lovely temperament.

....sniff, sniff...It smells like VICTORY!

That's right dear friends, fellow kickballers and gracious charity pledgers, The Free Agents have improved their record to 3 wins and 0 losses after last nights nail biting win over the reigning league champs, Recess Never Ends.

The game was exciting from start to finish. It was a pitchers duel as Recess Never Ends, carried a 2 - 0 lead through the bottom of the sixth inning. The Free Agents scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead and held on for the win in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The 3 runs doesn't break the bank for our charity pledgers, but was enough to beat a team that had gone undefeated the previous two seasons.

The win puts the Free Agents in sole possession of first place.

A victory celebration was held at the Bullpen Sports-bar.

Thanks to everybody for your continued support. The Free Agents will be taking on their next victim next Monday at 7:15, Paul Ecke Sports Park.

Free Agents Victorious...Again!

Game 2 for our beloved kickball team, the Free Agents, was played on Monday night with the outcome being another Free Agents victory over the Screamin' Mikes. The win sends the Free Agents to the top of the league with a 2 and 0 record. Technically the score of the game was 3 to 3, but the Screamin' Mikes did not have enough women on the field during play, which required them to forfeit the game. The Free Agents now look forward to a big game with Recess Never Ends next Monday at 7:15. Recess Never Ends is the reigning league champion. The match should be really exciting.

We had a booth during the Cardiff Dog Days of Summer on August 9th this year. Whenever we have a booth we like to have some fun and host a drawing. One of the winners of our portrait shoot drawing was a pug named Meatball. That's right, Meatball! One of the coolest dog names ever! Meatball is an absolute sweetheart and a real character to photograph. You can't tell in the photos, but Meatball is blind. He doesn't let it get him down though, as he is full of spunk and energy. He charmed us all with his toungey grins, curly tail and the occasional bump into the wall.

The Bostons: Peep and Chelsea

I love the story of why Peeps and Chelsea got their portraits taken. Today, Joe [the bostons uncle] will be marrying the Lovely Anne. Joe's sister will be in the wedding as an attendant.

So, last week Joe snuck these two little charmers in for a portrait to give his sister as a thank you for being in the wedding. Is Joe the sweetest brother/guy ever? Anne, I think you got a good one.

THOR... Archer's Little [?] Brother

Thor is the little brother of Archer. He is anything BUT little. Thor is an Italian Mastiff. He is big, cuddly and has a really beautiful coat. I can't decide which is my favorite part of Thor, the swirly fur on his neck or the amazing color of his eyes.

You will see Thor as one of the dogs featured on the new OMD splash page.

Okay, so this brings me to an age old question. Why don't I have a dog named after a Norse God? [although besides THOR, most of the Norse God names sound more like Elf names]

The point being, why is it so hard to think of great dog names when you get a new dog?

This week has been a treasure trove of wonderful dog names. My personal favorite being a pug named Meatball! Meatball, really genius. [We should be caught up enough to blog him by Thursday]

Now, I don't really see our Gus living up to a name like Thor, but we might have gone a bit further afield. One fine feature of the canine class is that you can always give them nicknames.

This is Archer. She is a Belgian Shepard. Similar to a German Shepard but a bit smaller and sleeker [is that a word?] Archer was originally bred to be a military dog. This is why she has a "Tough Girl" Tattoo J507 in her left ear. She was Adopted by Trainers Rob and Erin Jewell of Sit Means Sit. So in addition to being gorgeous she is stunningly well trained.

Cardiff Doggie Days

What a busy weekend! We spent Saturday in our booth at the Cardiff Dog Days of Summer. We we out there promoting Our Kickball Charity. We met so many nice people and amazing dogs!

We did a little shopping too. I skipped the Paul Mitchell Dog Wipes however.

We met Hazel the Boston. I won't lie, we are a tad partial to Boston Terriers. Hazel is a real doll!

We enjoyed the dog contests. I can't wait to meet the winners, each of whom won a portrait session from us!

Gus spent most of the day acting like a stubborn toddler refusing to sleep because there was too much fun going on. He finally fell asleep on the fuzzy table cloth on the table in our booth.

Long day for a little guy.

Instant

I love Polaroids.

I was saddened earlier this year to learn that Polaroid will suspend manufacturing of the instant film.

I remember the first time I saw a Polaroid picture. I was at Lake Tahoe as a little girl and a friend of my Mom's had a new camera. This was the type of Polaroid you pulled, peeled and then shook [whether it needed it or not]. I was smitten!

I am sorry that my kids will never really appreciate the magic of an instant picture. They have never known anything but instant pictures, instant everything in fact. They could not conceive a world where you call someone and if they are not home, you must wait and call back later. No text, no cell phones, no answering machines, you must simply wait. This "waiting for things" is what made instant film so exciting.

Now, I am admittedly pretty easily amused. Cellphones, Remote controls and GPS all seem like miracles to me. So it is little wonder that I am still so enamored with spectacle of Polaroid.

Mike and I decided on Polaroid pictures for our wedding. I have pictures of the kids, my childhood friends and crazy teenage parties all recorded in that distinctive, strangely contrasty and off color style. A few years ago I took and then taught a class on different techniques to elevate the Polaroid to an art form. There are some amazing artist doing unbelievably beautiful artwork with Polaroids. For me though, the draw was the instant gratification.

So, yesterday when I excavated an unopened pack of film from the studio while cleaning up, I could not resist a last chance to add our newest family member to our not so instant life.

Faita a stunningly beautiful dog. We seem to have had a lot of bull breeds and shaggy dogs lately it was fun to have a sleek and streamlined dog. What a beautiful color! She is still quite young and she did such a great job during the shoot. Take a look. She has a wonderful smile!

3 "dog days of summer" vacation ideas

As the dog days of summer drag on and the heat increases, we started looking for some cool getaways. There are many dog friendly locations and accommodations available, here are some ideas.

1. Peace and Natural Beauty - Sea Ranch

Summer is the perfect time to visit the north coast of California. Most of the year this beautiful landscape and rugged coastline can be a bit chilly. Summer days, however drift between the high 60s and low 70s, perfect! Sea Ranch is 30 miles north of Jenner on the Sonoma Coast.

They offer dog beds, homemade dog treats, filtered water and miles of dog friendly beaches and trails. I must admit that the lawn and Adirondack chairs look about perfect for Mike, Gus, Myself and a glass of wine.

2. Luxury Resort - Loews Resort Coronado

Located on beautiful Coronado Island just across the bay from San Diego is the wonderful resort that brings us the Loews Coronado Bay Surf Dog Competition each June. The resort is lovely. It is surrounded by water with sweeping views. They offer loads of pet extras, including pet room service.

My favorite feature is the onsite Coronado Surf Academy that offers Doggie Surfing Lessons. How cool is that?!

3. Casual Adventure - The Russian River

The russian river has long been a summer get away destination. Towns like Monte Rio, Guerneville and Rio Nido offer vacation cabins, many of which are dog friendly.

Canoeing on the river in late summer is a mellow, wonderful way to spend a day. The river is reasonably shallow and slow moving in most spots. Perfect for Fido. Much of the year you will find wild blackberries growing along the shore. A great exuse to make stop on the river edge and have a picnic.

Wine Tasting. Online lists of dog friendly wineries in the Sonoma, Napa, Russian River and Alexander Valleys abound. I recommend calling ahead to see exactly what "pet friendly" means at each winery. Some wineries offer cool, green lawn areas for enjoying cheese platters and sipping wines in the shade. Yes please! [golly, we sound like winos]

Hiking. A leisurely nature walk is more my speed than a real "hike" [Gus agrees with me]. Either way bring a backpack so you can pack some local wine and lunch then head down to the river or up into the redwoods. You can't go wrong. Don't miss the Armstrong Redwoods State Park.

Happy Campers

Remember those great summer days at camp? Playing in the water, running around with friends and ropes and obstacle courses. Now your dog can enjoy all this at Camp Run a Mutt.

Camp Run a Mutt is a doggie daycamp Located near downtown in San Diego.

We had the opportunity to to take Gus [our Bostontaius Terrier] to the camp to attend a Doggie Birthday Party and he had SO MUCH FUN! He ran and played and played and played. The folks at the Camp were wonderful, really knowledgeable and it was clear they truly love dogs.

Gus isn't much of a water dog, but he did enjoy sitting next to the the lovely waterfall by the dog pond. I'm not joking here. This place is NICE! Very clean with loads of shade, toys, obstacle courses. You don't have to take my word for it, though. Check out their 4 Camp Cams.

And they offer grooming. What camper comes home smelling better than when they left?!

Gus joins us at the office each day but I see us signing him up for a camp day soon.

Fave Five

It is Photo Phinish Phriday Phiesta at Camp Candid Carrie and I am happy to oblige a request for a favorites gallery. It has been great hearing from the folks on the field trip.

I have picked out five photographs that make me smile every time I see them. That is the litmus test for me. When I see a client smiling as they watch the presentation sideshow after a shoot or I find myself smiling as I edit the images, I know I have given my clients what they came for, a lasting bit of the joy.

Slider
I love this picture. It looks like slider is the the first Australian Shepard to win the British Open. It was done for Interior designers Tim and Linda Arbogast who own Jett Modern.
They had this amazing Union Jack Rug and I think the effect is striking.

Nougat
Nougat lives on a ranch with horses. The saddle was brought in with him from the ranch [the dust is real]. The proud and direct way that Nougat approached the shoot speaks volumes. Something in his wonderful eyes.

Ace
Okay, this is one tough cat! At the time of this shoot he was recovering from a run in with a skunk that involved stitches! I am not going to lie, I was scared of this little kitty. I was told by Alicia, his owner, that he is a mean cat and he will attack anything. So I took a deep breath and faced Ace. This is the first picture from the shoot and I think it represents Ace's feeling about the shoot fairly well. The images came out great and I came away with out a scratch. In this cat fight it is photographers 1/cats 0.

Faita
I am a sucker for a smiling dog. This photo has it all for me. A bold composition, lovely fur, great color and a happy dog. Faita looks like she is just about to say something complimentary. "have you lost weight?" or "is that handbag new? I just love it". In fact, feel free to email or comment your captions.

Gus
I had to include a picture of our very own Gus. This photograph may not have all of the technical merit of most of my photography but I shot it on our daily walk to work and it makes me smile. This image captures the joyful prancing that Gus does all the way to the studio each morning.

And like I said, it's about lasting memories and joy.

10 Tips for Better Pet Portraits

Welcome to all the folks visiting from Camp Candid Carrie. Being a bus stop on a virtual field trip is an honor I never anticipated!

My husband and I operate a portrait studio in San Diego. While we do a variety of portraiture, we specialize in pet portraits. I know how much fun it is to take pictures of pets. It's what I do for a living and I LOVE what I do.

I get asked frequently how to take better pet pictures. I am happy to share what I have learned over the years. While I do know some tricks most of these tips are tried and true portrait techniques learned from years as a photographer. Here they are, in no particular order.

1. Patience
Take a deep breath and lower your expectations. Chances are your pet won't sit and stay the way you want, so don't be disappointed or get stressed. Your pet picks up on the stress and no good can come from that. Be patient and have fun! You'll get much better pictures.

2. Get Some Help
I always have an assistant. My assistant [or the pet's owner] should be the only one talking to the pet. I am free to operate the camera setting and focus on composure. This prevents the pet from being overwhelmed with too many commands. My assistant holds treats/toys and directs the pet. Make sure your assistant isn't blocking your light or casting a shadow into your picture.

3. Treats & Toys
Great portraits are not on most pets priority list, so I resort to bribery. Use treats and toys that your dog likes....NOT loves. You want intrigue not insanity. My dog likes kibble and will be interested in getting some. However if I bring out the Pupperoni [we call it puppy crack], he turns into a deranged treat addict and the shoot is over. Use one treat/toy at a time, bringing out a new one as needed to capture your pets attention.

4. Time & Timing
Set aside time for your portraits. Grabbing the camera when your pet does something cute is great, but it rarely yields a masterpiece. Give yourself an hour to play and photograph. Take breaks, take lots of shots and take your time. Timing is also key. A good long walk or run will help your pet be calm for pictures.

5. Your Camera
Every camera has features and limitations. You can get wonderful photographs with ANY camera. The trick is to know what your camera will and won't do. I know you read your camera manual from cover to cover......what...you didn't? Well, no problem. I am going to give you a few features to go and look up. [tip: most camera manuals can be downloaded from the manufacturer, in case yours is as lost as mine is]

Features to look for:

Exposure Compensation
White Balance
Macro
Fill Flash
Portrait, Landscape, Action & Night Shot Modes

Don't get overwhelmed, just see if your camera has these features. If it does, spend some time playing with them one at a time. Each feature has a real life application that will greatly improve your pictures.

6. Prepare
Dead batteries and empty media cards love to ruin a cute pose. Have spares on hand.

7. Composition
Composing a portrait means looking at the big picture. As the photographer you must be aware of what is in and out of the frame.
Be sure to look for distracting details in the background. Watch for things that appear to grow out of your pets head, like house plants and floor lamps. At the park, avoid parking lots and trash cans in the background. Simply moving a few feet left or right can often be all that is needed.
Don't be afraid to get up close. Close up shots are often the most meaningful and compelling. Show off your pets lovely eyes, fur or paws with a close-up. Spend some time looking at professional portraits. Notice how the image is composed, the angle of the camera, the lighting. Look for ways to use what you like in your own pet portraits.

8. Experiment
Break the rules. Shoot into the sun, play with camera setting, stand on a ladder, lay on the floor. If it doesn't work out, you can always delete it.

9. Light
The single most important consideration in any photograph is light. In photography school, I was taught that by learning to look at and manage the light on your subject you will get better pictures [my, that sounded serious!]. This just means that it helps to give a bit of attention to the light falling on your pet and not just the cute pose. If the light doesn't look right, here are some things you can do to change it.

Turn off your flash. Natural light is the way to go. At the studio we do use flash, big, fancy studio lights with umbrellas and softboxes. We still prefer natural light and use it any chance we have. The best light is defused sunlight, the kind you get from north facing windows, a slightly overcast day, or a shady area at a sunny park.

Use a reflector [a piece of white poster board or a white pop up car shade work great] to reflect light back to your subject. This will help put a spark in the eyes and fill in shadows.

A tripod will keep your camera steady for longer exposures in lower light situations and works great for cats and sleeping dogs.

Turn on your flash [I know I just said turn it off, here's the exception] Play with your flash outside. Sometimes using your flash in a sunny situation can give you those great popping colors and bright eyes you see in professional portraits. This technique takes some patience and experimentation but the results are well worth it.

10. Wonderful and Unexpected
Now that you are prepared, know your camera, have the time and the patience, it's time to have some fun. Don't get to hung up on a certain poses or tricks. Some of my favorite shots come when a cat yawns or cleans it's face, when dogs hear a car horn and gives me a perfect profile shot as they look for the sound, or when a puppy lays down out of complete boredom with the shoot. By giving your pet a little wiggle room you will get wonderful portraits showing off all of your pets character.

Zucco

Yes that's right, he is named after the dark and handsome character from Grease. He's looks tough, but he's really a sweet heart, just like Danny Zucco. He is still a puppy, but the looks of those paws he'll be giant in no time.

Zucco is a spectacular Seal and White boxer. He is the new little brother of Bruno the Big Boxer in our portfolio. He tortures Bruno like a pesky little brother should. You will notice tome "Bruno Slobber" on his fur. He kept running off set to go have a quick wrestle with Bruno. Wrestling is more fun than modeling when you are a 12 week old boxer. I can't wait to picture them together when they are both grown.

We attended Betty's Birthday Pawty at Camp-Run-A-Mutt. Betty is the Dog we all know from the logo for Pawyard. You can see all of the pictures from the festivities here. [This would include pictures of our very own Gus making a sloppy frosting pig of himself!]

We got Puggle blogged!

I had the opportunity to photograph a most adorable puggle named Max. He lives in Irvine. Lori [Max's Human Mom] is a blogger. Lo and behold we showed up on Max's blog. You can see a photo Lori took duing the shoot at My Puggle Max. I am so glad they had a good time here. We certainly enjoyed them. Here is a photo from my shoot with Max the Puggle.

Lori is a graphic designer and did a very cool "Che" style graphic of Max for a tee shirt. We are talking about offering these to our customers for their own dogs. Stay tuned!
